Questions & Answers
Find answers to common inquiries about our program, tournaments, and student life.
Do I need to apply to be on the team?
No application is necessary. Bellaire Debate is open to all students. Those interested should simply select "Debate Honors" during course selection to join the class.
Do I need prior experience?
No prior experience is needed. First-year members are considered “novices” and receive an introduction to all competitive events at the start of the year. They are encouraged to attend tournaments and try different events before selecting one to focus on. Varsity debaters mentor novices throughout the season to support their growth.
What are the requirements for being on the speech and debate team?
Debaters must attend at least six local tournaments during the regular season. During tournament weeks, they must attend two lunch practices (Wednesday and Thursday) or one after-school practice on Wednesday until 6:00 p.m.
Does the speech and debate team travel?
Yes. Bellaire Debate regularly travels to tournaments across the country. In recent years, the team has attended:
- Grapevine (Dallas, Texas)
- Longhorn Classic (Austin, Texas)
- Churchill (San Antonio)
- Barkley Forum for High Schools (Atlanta, Georgia)
- TFA State (Frisco, Texas)
- Tournament of Champions (Lexington, Kentucky)
- NSDA Nationals (Des Moines, Iowa)
These travel opportunities offer valuable competitive experience and a chance to connect with the national speech and debate community.
